COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina State Sen. Marlon Kimpson of Charleston is the featured speaker at the University of South Carolina’s kickoff event commemorating Martin Luther King Day.

The Charleston attorney speaks Tuesday at the annual breakfast held at Williams-Brice Stadium.

The Democratic senator represents Charleston and Dorchester counties. He’s a graduate of Morehouse College and the University of South Carolina School of Law.

Kimpson has been an advocate for scholarships for African-American students to the Medical University of South Carolina. He has served on boards for the Carolina Youth Development Center, the Charleston Trident Urban League and the University of South Carolina Board of Visitors.

He has served as president of the Charleston Black Lawyers Association and first vice chair of the state Democratic Party.
