OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Fire crews are working to rescue a plumber who fell into a sewer line in Oakland and remains stuck under debris nine hours later.

Oakland Fire Department Battalion Chief says the plumber was working in East Oakland Tuesday afternoon when the land around him gave way and he fell some 15 feet below the street.

The Oakland Tribune reports (https://bayareane.ws/1l5067Q) the worker is partially buried but conscious and talking to a group of firefighters trained to rescue people from confined spaces.

The plumber remained stuck Tuesday night and fire officials were digging out sand to help bring him out.
