MINOT, N.D. (AP) - A man accused of shooting his estranged wife at her apartment in Minot has pleaded not guilty to violating a protection order.

Joseph Barnes Jr. appeared Tuesday in North Central District Court to face two misdemeanor counts of violating a protection order. He told the judge that he accidentally shot his wife Nov. 8 and asked how a no contact order preventing him from seeing her and his children can be dropped.

The Minot Daily News (https://bit.ly/1JK2iNP ) reports that Barnes is accused of calling his wife 198 times from jail between Nov. 17 and Dec. 22. It wasn’t immediately clear whether he has an attorney.

Barnes is scheduled to return to court Jan. 28 to face a felony aggravated assault charge in the shooting. A pretrial conference on the misdemeanor charges is scheduled for March 23.
