COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio Gov. John Kasich (KAY’-sik) is taking his campaign to South Carolina a day ahead of the next Republican debate.

The two-term governor and former congressman scheduled a meet-and-greet event Wednesday in Charleston, as he continues his focus on early primary states. He’s also visited Iowa and Nevada in recent days.

South Carolina picks its Republican favorite Feb. 20, 11 days after New Hampshire kicks off the 2016 election cycle with the nation’s first primary.

Kasich has set his sights on a top-tier New Hampshire victory as a way to gain needed traction nationally amid a crowded GOP field. His efforts were helped by placement on Thursday’s debate stage with just six others, the smallest line-up yet for Republicans.

The debate is hosted by Fox, where Kasich once worked.
