LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) - New details have emerged after police say a security guard shot and critically wounded a patient at Lynchburg General Hospital.

In a news release, Lynchburg police tell media outlets that 28-year-old Jonathan Warner was shot during a physical altercation with Centra security officer Wes Gillespie early Monday.

Police say an investigation shows Warner attacked Gillespie while in a building adjacent to the hospital’s emergency department.

During the struggle, investigators say Warner was able to disarm Gillespie of his stun gun, which was discharged by Warner.

Police say Warner physically assaulted Gillespie and another employee. Authorities say he was armed with the stun gun at the time of the shooting.

Warner was hospitalized, but his condition wasn’t available Tuesday night. Gillespie sustained minor injuries.

The investigation is ongoing.
