CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen is calling on President Barack Obama to increase his request for funding to address the heroin epidemic.

Her letter to Obama cites a 74 percent increase in substance misuse-related deaths between 2013 and 2014 in New Hampshire, and the strain it puts on first responders and treatment providers.

She asks that as the president finalizes his fiscal Year 2017 budget request, she urges him to include “robust support” for substance abuse prevention, intervention, treatment and recovery.

Shaheen has introduced emergency funding legislation that would provide $600 million to address the heroin and opioid abuse epidemic.
