TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos says a deputy shot a robbery suspect after the man pointed a gun at people in a pharmacy and then at deputies.

The suspect was hospitalized in critical condition with a life-threatening wound after the shooting Tuesday at a Tucson-area Walgreens where the man allegedly demanded controlled prescription medication.

The man was still inside the store when deputies arrived, and he was shot after they chased him to a parking lot.

Sheriff’s officials say the man ignored commands from deputies.

The deputy involved in the shooting was placed on standard administrative leave pending an investigation of the shooting.

The suspect’s identity was not immediately released.
