TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - The new chief of the Border Patrol’s Tucson Sector has taken command.

Paul Beeson replaces Manny Padilla, who is now in Texas.

Beeson has been with the agency since 1985 and served as chief of the Yuma Sector between 2007 and 2010. He later served as the chief of the San Diego Sector.

The Tucson Sector comprises nearly all of Arizona and includes about 4,000 agents.

It’s known for being a hotbed for illegal immigration and drug smuggling, although apprehensions have gone down in recent years. Agents made nearly 88,000 apprehensions in fiscal year 2014, significantly fewer than in past years.
