EVANS, N.Y. (AP) - Police are investigating after a tractor-trailer and an ambulance crashed head-on in western New York, leaving one person dead and three others hospitalized.

It happened around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday on Route 20 in the Erie County town of Evans, south of Buffalo.

Fire officials say whiteout conditions were a factor.

A patient being transported in the ambulance died after the crash. Three others, including the driver of the tractor-trailer, were hospitalized.

Police say the crash is under investigation. The identity of the person who died hasn’t been released.

Weather is also suspected of causing an accident that closed a 17-mile stretch of the Thruway’s westbound lanes near the Pennsylvania border. The crash involved several tractor-trailers and other vehicles. Lanes between exits 59 and 60 were closed from around 2:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
