BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama Secretary of State’s office says presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is scheduled to make a campaign stop in Birmingham.

Secretary of State John Merrill said in a statement Thursday that Sanders is scheduled to appear at the Boutwell Memorial Auditorium Monday at 7 p.m.

Merrill says doors open at 6 p.m. Campaign officials say attendees are encouraged to RSVP for the free event on the campaign’s website. Tickets are not required.

Merrill says Sanders will be the eleventh candidate to visit the state. Southern states have banded together in a so-called “SEC Primary” on March 1 to try drawing more interest in the region from presidential contenders.

Merrill says moving the state’s primary date to March 1 is one of the most significant things his office has done.
