PASSAIC, N.J. (AP) - Prosecutors say a northern New Jersey substitute teacher fondled a 10-year-old student while two classmates watched.

Pedro Rodriguez was arrested Tuesday. His public defender pleaded not guilty to sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child charges on his behalf.

The 58-year-old Passaic man was a substitute teacher at William B. Cruise Memorial School No. 11, located in the Passaic County city. Officials say Rodriguez was fired by the school district on Wednesday.

His bail was set at $100,000.

The case has been referred to a grand jury for indictment. He faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

A city schools spokesman says the state’s Child Protection and Permanency agency has been notified.
