PHOENIX (AP) - Republican leaders of the Arizona House are calling in their members for an early jump on the state’s budget picture.

House Speaker David Gowan says members will be briefed on the revenue picture by the Legislature’s budget analysts on Thursday. The briefings come a day before Republican Gov. Doug Ducey is set to release his budget proposal.

Gowan says briefing members behind closed doors will allow them to understand the numbers in advance of the governor’s spending proposals.

House appropriations committee member John Allen called the briefings before the governor’s spending proposal “premature” since his committee hasn’t even met for the first time. But the Scottsdale Republican says early briefings might move the budget process even faster than last year’s extremely rapid budget deal.
