POWDERSVILLE, S.C. (AP) - The Anderson County coroner says the serial number on a defibrillator has helped identify human remains as those of a Greenville County man missing since last summer.

Coroner Greg Shore told WYFF-TV (https://bit.ly/1n6TqqV) the remains are those of 46-year-old Gary Burton, whose estranged wife reported him missing. Shore says he believes Burton’s body had been in the woods since possibly as early as May.

Authorities say animals appear to have moved the bones around in the woods.

A young man on a 4-wheeler found a skull and other skeletal remains in the wooded area off S.C. Highway 153 near Powdersville and called authorities Sunday evening.

A forensic anthropologist who works for the Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office is assisting Anderson County officials in their investigation.
