TEWKSBURY, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts high school’s sports teams have been known as the Redmen for decades, but a name change may soon be imminent.

The Sun of Lowell reports that a public forum has been scheduled for Jan. 27 for members of the community to discuss if a new nickname is needed at Tewksbury Memorial High School.

The meeting was spurred by a concerned parent who contacted school Superintendent John O’Connor about a unique offer.

Linda Thomas says she emailed O’Connor after reading that athletic apparel giant Adidas was offering design resources and financial assistance to schools thinking of rebranding.

After the issue was raised at a December school committee meeting, O’Connor scheduled the forum.

Approximately 40 high schools in Massachusetts still use Native American iconography.
