WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) - Three people have been arrested in connection with an early morning New Year’s Day shooting in downtown Waterloo.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports (https://bit.ly/1PDSpCc ) that 22-year-old Kristopher Darquel Spates Jr. of Waterloo faces weapons charges and interference with officials acts. A 15-year-old and 16-year-old were charged with carrying weapons.

Police responded to the area around 1:50 a.m. Friday following a complaint that people were refusing to leave a downtown bar.

Officers say they noticed a group in an alley and heard gunshots. A Waterloo police officer fired one round at a person holding a gun but missed, and the person fled.

Authorities say 31-year-old Ramarez Maurice Gary of Waterloo was hospitalized with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his leg.

Online court records did not list an attorney for Spates.
