GAFFNEY, S.C. (AP) - The Cherokee County coroner says a Gaffney man was killed while playing with a gun at his house on New Year’s Eve.

Coroner Dennis Fowler identified the victim as 20-year-old Tezlar Wayne Ross.

Fowler said in a statement released Friday that witnesses reported Ross and three others were in his bedroom looking at a .380 hand gun about 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

The coroner says witnesses said Ross removed the clip from the gun, which he then placed to his head. The statement says Ross was joking with others when the gun discharged.

An autopsy will be performed to assist with the coroner’s investigation into the death, which Fowler said is continuing.
