DETROIT (AP) - A funeral has been held for a 35-year-old Detroit man killed by a Dearborn police officer.

Kevin Matthews’ funeral was held Saturday at Morningview Baptist Church, more than a week after he shot multiple times in Detroit during a struggle with a suburban officer. The Rev. Charles Williams II offered the eulogy.

Police say Matthews struggled with a Dearborn officer following a foot chase into a Detroit yard. Matthews, who was unarmed, was suspected in a theft in Dearborn and was wanted by another police department.

State police are investigating the shooting.

Matthews’ mother, Valarie Johnson, says he had mental and emotional problems and needed to be comforted during periods of stress. He’d say: “Momma, don’t let nobody hurt me.”
