PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A 28-year-old man was found dead in his Portland jail cell on New Year’s Eve.

The Oregonian reports (https://is.gd/4ir3dO) William Coupchiak was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center Thursday morning on charges he violated his parole.

More than 12 hours later, at 10:37 p.m. a sheriff’s deputy found him “unresponsive” in his jail during a routine check.

Emergency officials were unable to revive Coupchiak.

Sgt. Steve Dangler says Coupchiak’s last known address was in Portland, but he was currently homeless.

The cause of death is still uncertain, but county officials expect to learn more from a toxicology test and autopsy later this week.
