KADOKA, S.D. (AP) - A 74-year-old Kadoka man is accused of stealing nearly $145,000 from the city’s volunteer fire department over the last decade.

Paul Briggs is charged in state court with grand theft. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.

The Rapid City Journal says (https://bit.ly/1R6x4mO) Briggs was the treasurer of the fire department, a nonprofit funded by the city and donations. He allegedly took money from the group’s bank account by making withdrawals and writing checks to cash on numerous occasions.

Court documents show that Fire Chief Brian Fromm began looking into the matter because he couldn’t understand why the department was “always broke.” Fromm later contacted the state Division of Criminal Investigation.

A phone number listed for Briggs is no longer in service.
