MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Officials say the Mississippi River is nearing flood stage in Memphis, where water has begun approaching a small number of homes in low-lying areas.

National Weather Service forecasters say the Mississippi River will reach flood stage of 34 feet Saturday night. Officials say the river is expected to reach 41 feet in Memphis next Friday.

Dale Lane, director of the Shelby County Office of Preparedness, says high water from the river and its tributaries is approaching some homes on Mud Island, located just south of Memphis’ downtown. A road on Mud Island is being closed on Monday, but no homes have been reported flooded.

The emergency preparedness office also has pointed out four other areas where high water could approach roads and property.

No evacuations have been ordered.
