BOSTON (AP) - Boston police say a man was arrested after he walked up to a police cruiser New Year’s Day and began punching the officer in the face.

Police say the 23-year-old Everett man faces assault and other charges.

A police news release says the officer was parked at Boston City Hall Dock Square about 2 a.m. Friday, monitoring New Year’s Eve crowds, when a man approached and said: “You heard about the war, right?”

Police say the man then began hitting the officer with his fist and the officer hit back while radioing for help.

The suspect fled, but backup units found him.

Police say he fought them and yelled: “You are all doomed, and you’re going to die. They told me to do this.”

The officer’s name wasn’t released.
