SAN DIEGO (AP) - A San Diego police officer shot and killed a man who tried to attack him with a large kitchen knife.

Police say officers were responding Friday night to a call that a man had held a knife to his boyfriend’s neck, and then fled.

An officer found and confronted a suspect.

Police say he refused to stop or drop his knife and instead came toward the officer.

According to police, the officer shot once, hitting the man in the chest.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the hospital early Saturday morning.

Police say he had a history of violence.
