PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Department of Environmental management says it is has given two grants to remove wrecked and abandoned vessels that are sitting in waterways off Portsmouth and Westerly, Rhode Island.

The DEM says it has given $23,400 to Portsmouth to remove a vessel in waters off Blue Hill Cove.

The Watch Hill Fire District is receiving $6,278 to pay to remove a boat that was destroyed by fire and is sitting on the shoreline of the Napatree Point Conservation Area.

The grants are paid for out an account set up in 2012 and funded by a surcharge on boat registration fees.

DEM Director Janet Coit says abandoned vessels pose a significant threat to the health of the state’s waters and to the safe passage of boaters.
