DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Authorities are investigating the death of an inmate at the Durham County jail.

Local media outlets report county officials said a member of the jail staff found 29-year-old Matthew Lamont McCain unresponsive and immediately performed life-saving measures. Officials said paramedics were unable to resuscitate McCain, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Durham County Sheriff’s Office is investigating McCain’s death. His body was taken to the State Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death.

Records show McCain had been in jail since August on charges of assault on a female, assault with a deadly weapon, battery of an unborn child, communicating threats and domestic criminal trespass.
