PORTAGE, Wis. (AP) - Authorities have arrested the owner of a dog that was found abandoned in a large duffel bag at a wildlife area in south-central Wisconsin.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office says the 56-year-old woman from the Village of Pardeeville voluntarily reported to the sheriff’s office.

The owner is in jail on suspicion of mistreating animals and abandoning animals. She is scheduled to appear in court Monday.

The dog - an adult female black Lab - was found Thursday in a parking lot at the French Creek Wildlife Area. The animal apparently had suffered blunt force trauma to the head, but authorities don’t know if that happened before or after the dog was placed in the duffel bag.

The Columbia County Humane Society has the dog in its custody.
