ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a 19-year-old man has been rescued from the base of a dam on the creek that runs through the Ithaca gorge.

The Ithaca Fire Department says it was called around 8 a.m. Friday for a report of an injured man at the base of the Beebe (BEE’-bee) Lake Dam on Fall Creek where it cuts through the Cornell University campus.

Firefighters used ropes and ladders to reach the man, who had serious injuries and was hypothermic.

Officials say it took about 30 minutes to get the man out of the gorge and to a field on the Cornell campus where a helicopter carried the man to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pennsylvania.

Authorities say the details of how the man ended up below the dam are still being investigated by Cornell’s police department.
