TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Tucson Unified School District mechanics will be inspecting a line of school buses this weekend after a bus fire at Whitmore Elementary.

The driver of the 2008 Thomas bus noticed smoke and was able to evacuate before the fire erupted Friday.

No children were on the bus and the driver wasn’t injured.

Tucson Fire Department crews extinguished the fire quickly and the bus was towed to the Tucson Unified Bus Barn for investigation.

Mechanics will focus on the remaining 2008 Thomas buses that are in operation to ensure they are safe.

The district expects no interruption of service for next week.

Tucson Unified is Southern Arizona’s largest school with more than 50,000 students.
