MADISON, Wis. (AP) - University of Wisconsin System President Ray Cross plans to issue a statement addressing the system’s diversity shortcomings.

Students, alumni and faculty from UW-Parkside, UW-Madison and UW-Fond du Lac met with Cross on Thursday. They asked Cross to acknowledge a lack of progress on diversity, create diversity training and re-commit to Plan 2008, which laid out diversity goals calling for enrolling more students of color and boosting their graduation rates.

The United Council of University of Wisconsin Students said in a news release that Cross agreed to apologize for the system’s shortcomings.

System spokesman Alex Hummel said Cross offered to craft a statement addressing where the system has come up short but said he wouldn’t characterize it as an apology. Hummel said he wasn’t sure when Cross would release the statement.
