WASHINGTON (AP) - The D.C. National Guard has activated nearly 130 members to help local agencies during the blizzard hitting the mid-Atlantic region.

Guard spokesman Maj. Byron Coward said Saturday that 128 members are using 24 Humvees and heavy-duty four-wheel drive trucks across the District of Columbia. He says they’re serving at the request of the mayor and D.C. Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency.

Coward says they responded to about five calls an hour overnight, transporting essential personnel as their shifts begin and end, helping free vehicles stuck in the snow and sometimes driving ahead of cruisers responding to calls. He says guard members have even helped out people who flag them down between calls.
