COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Flags at the Ohio Statehouse will fly at half-staff in honor of a slain police officer.

Flags also will be at half-staff at public buildings in Knox and Licking counties on Saturday to memorialize Danville Officer Thomas Cottrell.

Gov. John Kasich (KAY’-sik) ordered the sign of respect this week. Cottrell’s funeral was set for 11 a.m. Saturday at The Ohio State University branch campus in Newark, about 30 miles east of Columbus.

Cottrell was shot in the head last Sunday, allegedly by a suspect believed to have been targeting an officer.

The suspect, 32-year-old Herschel Ray Jones III, is being held pending murder charges.

Jones’ ex-girlfriend told a dispatcher that he left the house with weapons Sunday night and intended to kill an officer.
