NEW YORK (AP) - New Yorkers have been scrambling to get home ahead of a ban on road travel and a partial shutdown of the subway system because of the snowstorm.

Authorities announced the shutdown plan around 12:30 p.m. Saturday. It took effect within a few hours.

As the road-travel prohibition began, Steven Valarezo was wondering how he’d get his car out of the middle of a Manhattan street. He’d left work to try to beat the ban home to the Bronx, but the snow ripped the muffler off his car and stranded it in the roadway.

A bit later, Raul Oseguera was waiting for his wife to get off from work so he could head home from his Brooklyn barber shop. But he had a backup plan: staying with friends and family nearby.
