NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A Carnival krewe is helping fight crime in New Orleans.

The New Orleans Police Department says the Krewe of Hermes has provided the funds to buy a K-9 police dog, 50 private security cameras and special kits emergency medics can use during a mass shooting scenario.

The security cameras are to be installed on streets through an adopt-a-block program organized by the New Orleans Police & Justice Foundation, a group that supports police officers.

The EMS kits include ballistic protective gear for two medics and medical supplies to treat multiple gunshot victims.

The NOPD said the amount the krewe was donating would not be disclosed.

A police news release says the krewe has more than 700 members and it is the oldest active night parade during Carnival in New Orleans.
