CHINA GROVE, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina officers are looking for an all-terrain vehicle operator who ran down a state trooper, prompting the officer to fire gunshots at the escaping suspect.

The State Highway Patrol said Saturday the trooper was taken to a Concord hospital for serious injuries that weren’t non-life threatening.

The patrol said it happened in a neighborhood in the Rowan County town of China Grove around 2 a.m. Saturday. The trooper was on patrol when he saw two of the four-wheel, off-road vehicles on a state highway and directed the operators to stop.

He trailed the ATVs into a subdivision. When he got out of his cruiser, one of the operators drove at the trooper and hit him at high speed. The trooper fired his handgun and the ATV drivers fled.
