DELAWARE CITY, Del. (AP) - The Delaware City Refinery shut down following a power failure.

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control says Saturday’s shutdown was accompanied by flaring and a chemical release.

DNREC investigator Casey Fountain told The News Journal (https://delonline.us/1KwPWDF ) that the 11:30 a.m. power outage was likely tied to the big snowstorm hitting the East Coast.

Refinery manager Barbara Roehl says officials are investigating the cause and working to get the plant online.

A DNREC notification following the power failure said there was a release of pollutants, including hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide and hydrogen cyanide. Fountain says harmful levels of the pollutants were not detected at the fence line and downwind from the facility.
