HUDGINS, Va. (AP) - The historic Donk’s Theater in Mathews County will come down after being severely damaged in inclement weather.

Mathews County Building Official Jamie Wilks tells local media the collapse Friday night was likely caused by the weight of snow and ice mixed with heavy wind gusts. He says the building, on the National Register of Historic Places, is a total loss.

Mathews County Sheriff Mark Barrick says that when authorities responded to the building, the roof had completely buckled and taken out three walls. It was unoccupied and there were no injuries.

The owner, Josie Thorpe, says work will soon begin to secure the building and remove memorabilia. It will eventually be demolished.

The theater first opened in June 1947 and gained the tag line, “Home of Virginia’s Lil’ Ole Opry.”
