NEW YORK (AP) - The NHL postponed Sunday’s game between the Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins because of the severe snowstorm in the Washington area.

The league on Saturday did not announce a makeup date.

This is the third game postponed in Washington because of the storm, following the Capitals’ game against the Anaheim Ducks and the NBA game between the Wizards and Utah Jazz.

The Penguins next play against the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday and the Capitals against the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday.

Washington’s game on Friday against Anaheim had been moved up two hours before the league postponed it that day. A makeup date is not set for that game, either.

The worst of the blizzard was yet to come. According to the National Weather Service, strong winds and heavy snow were expected to produce “life-threatening blizzard conditions” throughout Saturday.

Forecasters also predicted up to a half-inch of ice accumulation in the Carolinas, and potentially serious coastal flooding in the mid-Atlantic.
