VENTURA, Calif. (AP) - The trial has begun for a California woman accused of killing her Olympic medalist husband seven years ago.

The Ventura County Star reports (https://bit.ly/1RZB0WX ) that a jury was selected Friday in the murder trial of 56-year-old Jane Laut.

Laut is accused of fatally shooting Dave Laut in August 2009. David Laut was a star shot-putter who won a bronze medal in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. They were high school sweethearts and married for 29 years.

Prosecutors say Laut intentionally shot her husband and lied to detectives about it. Laut’s attorneys argue that she was a victim of abuse and shot her husband in self-defense.

Opening statements are expected Tuesday.

If convicted, Laut would face up to life in prison.
