TOMS RIVER, N.J. (AP) - A man who punctured a woman’s lung with a screwdriver is now headed to prison.

Steen Tarpley received a 6 ½-year sentence Friday for the attack, which occurred in a Toms River hotel room in February 2014. The 51-year-old Seaside Heights man had pleaded guilty to aggravated assault.

Authorities say police responded to the hotel after the 31-year-old victim emerged naked and bloody from a room and knocked on the door of another room. The woman claimed she had been raped, stabbed and held against her will.

Authorities say Tarpley attacked the woman after he learned about a relationship she had with another man.

Tarpley must serve nearly six years before he becomes eligible for parole. He also will have to serve three years of supervised release once he’s freed.
