HOLLAND, Mich. (AP) - The family of a western Michigan couple has been named as the lead benefactor for an $11 million renovation to the Holland Civic Center.

Jim Heeringa and his wife, Eileen, are donating $2 million to the project in honor of his parents, George and Lucile Heeringa. The Grand Rapids Press (https://bit.ly/1ZYgiuG ) reports that the city plans to name the building after the late Holland residents at a ribbon-cutting ceremony in mid-2018.

George Heeringa played football, tennis and basketball at Hope College. He worked at Hart & Cooley, a Holland-based heating and cooling system manufacturing company, for 50 years.

Upgrades planned for the Holland Civic Center include renovating restrooms and making the building wheelchair accessible. The project also will add an outdoor venue with a children’s sculpture garden, a performance stage and a splash pad.
