SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - An American white pelican is still prowling Syracuse’s Inner Harbor.

Joe Brin of the Onondaga Audubon Club tells The Post-Standard of Syracuse (bit.ly/1PtlBY2) the big bird most likely will stay awhile. Brin says even if the harbor freezes, the pelican will probably stay until the entire lake freezes.

The bird was first spotted more than a week ago and then disappeared before two sightings were noted Friday on E-Bird, a website maintained by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

The pelican has caught the attention of birders throughout the state because it’s out of place in central New York for this time of year. The species normally is seen at this time of year wintering on the Gulf Coast of Mexico.
