SUMMERFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A company has withdrawn its application seeking a permit for a proposed injection well in Monroe County.

The Monroe News reports (https://bit.ly/1OMRmhg ) Trendwell Energy Corp. notified landowners leasing property to the company for oil and gas production that due to “our exploration results to date and the low oil-price environment, we cannot justify additional exploration activities at this time.”

Local officials announced the update at a Monday news conference.

Plans called for a 765-foot-deep well in Summerfield Township and injecting saltwater brine, a naturally occurring byproduct found when drilling for oil.

Some residents worried that the disposal well could leak and contaminants could spread throughout the area, affecting drinking water.
