SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Former longtime U.S. Sen. Bob Bennett is being honored by a political institute at the University of Utah.

Bennett was inducted Wednesday into the Hinckley Institute of Politics’ Hall of Fame.

The Republican developed a reputation as a moderate conservative during his 18 years in the U.S. Senate. He was first elected in 1992 and served three terms.

He lost his seat in 2010 when delegates ousted him at the state GOP convention.

The Institute said in a news release that Bennett had the ability to work with lawmakers from both political parties to find pragmatic solutions. They also commended his work in getting funds to for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

The 82-year-old was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year, but said recently radiation therapy seems to have helped.
