JOLIET, Ill. (AP) - A judge has declined to reduce bond for a suburban Chicago man charged with murder in his wife’s beating death.

The (Joliet) Herald-News (https://bit.ly/23xrgGT ) reports that the judge on Thursday denied a request from 50-year-old Bahaa A. Sam to reduce his bond from $5 million to $1 million.

Sam is accused of striking his wife, 38-year-old Nermeen Sam, several times with a curled weightlifting bar in the front yard of their Tinley Park home in December 2012.

Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Steven Platek says Sam told investigators that he and his wife had been arguing over his inability to hold a job.

Sam also faces a charge of aggravated battery to a peace officer for allegedly fighting with guards at the Will County jail in 2014.
