SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is calling for an investigation after video surfaced of an apparently live cow picked up by a front-end loader and tossed into a dump truck after livestock semitrailer crash.

PETA sent a letter Friday to the Weber County Sheriff calling for potential criminal charges in the cleanup operation.

The Standard-Examiner of Ogden reports that about 70 cows died after the semitrailer crashed on the on-ramp to Interstate 84 from Interstate 15 in Riverdale on Monday.

Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Mike Loveland says a private company handled the cleanup operation after the speeding truck crashed.

Loveland says euthanizing the injured cows was difficult because they were panicked and the crash site was close to a busy highway, but activists say it could have been handled more humanely.
