DILLON, S.C. (AP) - The Dillon County coroner has released the name of a man who was shot and killed by a sheriff’s deputy at a home in the Oak Grove community this week.

Coroner Donnie Grimsley tells local media outlets that 27-year-old John Wesley Smith of Latta was killed in the shooting.

State Law Enforcement Division spokesman Thom Berry says deputies responded to a house Wednesday afternoon after a report of a break-in. He says deputies found instead they were dealing with a domestic dispute.

Berry says officers were confronted by Smith, who had a knife. He says deputies tried to use pepper spray to subdue him and in the ensuing confrontation a deputy fired his gun at Smith.

The name of the officer has not yet been released.
