PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - State environmental officials say they have stocked 1,400 brown and brook trout in ponds and rivers throughout Rhode Island.

The state Department of Environmental Management says trout is stocked in ponds including Meadowbrook Pond in Richmond, Olney Pond in Lincoln, North Kingstown’s Silver Spring Lake and Upper Melville Pond in Portsmouth, among others.

DEM Director Janet Coit says fishing is a popular winter activity in Rhode Island that gives people of all ages an opportunity to unwind outdoors.

The DEM reminds prospective anglers that they must have a current fishing license and a Trout Conservation Stamp. They may catch up to two trout a day through Feb. 29.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service estimated there were 175,000 recreational anglers ages 16-plus in Rhode Island each year.
