MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. (AP) - State police believe about 100 people attended a New Year’s Eve house party in Middletown where a New York firefighter was fatally stabbed.

Troopers are asking Sunday that anyone with information about Justin Speights’ murder in the early hours of Jan. 1 to contact investigators.

A Silver Lake Fire Department spokesman told the Times Herald-Record (https://bit.ly/1Ssh65l ) Speights won the department’s “Member of the Year” award in 2013.

Maj. Joseph Tripodo told the paper the 20-year-old Speights was attempting to break up a fight when he was stabbed.

Tripodo says some partygoers tried to revive Speights but weren’t successful.
