KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) - Bird watchers in Key West are excited about recent sightings of the rare wood stork.

The Key West Citizen (https://keysnews.com/node ) reports that the waddling birds have been spotted at The Key West Tropical Forest and Botanical Garden.

Bird expert Mark Hedden is executive director of the Florida Keys chapter of the Audubon Society. Hedden says wood storks are spotted in the Keys fewer than 10 times a year.

Hedden says the birds breed in the Everglades and usually don’t wander far from that area.

Local resident Pat Ayers spotted a wood stork at the Key West Golf Club. Ayers was excited about the sighting. Ayers said storks are a symbol of good luck and positive sign for the new year.
