VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) - A woman critically injured in a Vancouver house fire was rescued from a garage on Sunday morning.

The Columbian newspaper reports (https://is.gd/77ZjXz ) four more people were hurt in the fire in east Vancouver.

When firefighters arrived at the home shortly after 5 a.m., other residents were outside the garage using various tools, such as a sledge hammer, to break through to the trapped women.

Firefighter-paramedic Kevin Stromberg says they cut the garage door off to get to the young woman and dog inside. She was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Four other residents had minor injuries from trying to get into the garage, including some smoke inhalation and cuts. Three of them were transported to a hospital. Stromberg said he did not know if the dog found inside the garage was injured.
