AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - The Maine Forest Service and a Portland nonprofit group say they are giving 19 forestry grants totaling more than $130,000.

The grants are part of Project Canopy, a partnership between the forest service and GrowSmart Maine. The grants include 12 planning and education grants and seven tree planting and maintenance grants.

The grant recipients include College of the Atlantic, Merryspring Nature Center and the Penobscot Nation, in addition to several municipalities.

Project Canopy director Jan Ames Santerre says the partnership has given out more than $1.5 million for community forest projects since 2003.
